I made my way back into town and arranged to stay at a Rykosan. Rykosans are the Japanese version of a guesthouse. My impression of them was that they are very family friendly and they pamper you with food and service.
I didn't want to stay at them too much since the affordable ones have curfews. The one I found was recommended in Lonely Planet. It was very nice and the people there were so incredibly nice! However, there was no great pampering involved. But you felt you were living in someone's home rather than a sterile business hotel.
After making reservations at the Rykosan I went over to Higashi-Honganji Temple right across the street. This is the main gate.
