This is Kabuki-Za Theatre in Ginza. I was lucky that 2003 marked the 400th year of Kabuki. In celebration they were staging a special production starring several "National Treasure" actors. Which made the crowd extra excited to be there.
I saw the evening performance which was 5 hours long! And that was only the second half. The first half they played during the day.
Kabuki is sort of like seeing an opera with a baseball stadium mentality. People howl out at the actors that they like and at key moments when the actors make crazy poses. I didn't get it, but it cracked me up to see the audience react like that.
During the intermissions everyone breaks out their little bento boxes. I didn't bring my food so I quickly grabbed some from the concession stand and ate in my seat. The whole experience was great fun! I was able to follow the action with a radio they provide that translates and clues you in to the action as the performance rolls along.
