Khao San Road, Bangkok
Think of Khao San Road as the St. Marks Place of Bangkok. Cheap bars and westernized Thai food places all spill out onto the street. Weekend nights the street closes to traffic and it becomes a huge scene. The street also morphs several times a day. Early morning it looks completely different from afternoon, and then different again from the night version.

4 out of the 5 times I returned to Bangkok I stayed here. Most backpackers stay around here as it's pretty convenient. You couldn't avoid meeting fellow travellers here if you tried!

One accommodation TIP would be to walk to the end of Khao San Road that has the temple. Then walk to the right around the temple. The road that follows the temple wall back and around is lined with decent guesthouses. One that I stayed in a few times is on a small sidestreet that juts off, dead center, from the back of the temple. It is called the Wild Orchid. It was literally weeks old at the time, and rather nice and well kept in the midst of grubby super cheap guesthouses.
